Star Wars names follow rules you can hear: Darth plus a dark word, plain humans with folk-compound surnames, apostrophes marking alien lineages, droids running on designations. Every draw shows its parts. Invented parts say invented.
?
Pick a species register, then tap Generate. Every name shows its parts.
Pick a register: Human, Sith Lord, alien with an apostrophe, bounty hunter, or droid. Each speaks one documented convention.
Press Generate.
Read the receipt: one chip per part, each with its job, plus the convention line. Documented elements are marked documented, invented ones invented.
What is a Star Wars name generator? A tool that assembles names inside the saga's documented naming conventions and shows the parts. Is it canon? No, and it does not pretend to be. Canon names appear here only as receipts for the grammar. Is it free? Yes.
How do Star Wars names work?
Darth Vader reads as dark plus father. That is the sound-symbolism George Lucas built the saga on, and he has said as much in interviews: the dark side gets dark-sounding names. The galaxy runs on audible morality. Sidious leans on insidious. Tyrannus on tyrant. Plagueis on plague. Maul needs no help at all.
Then the registers split. Humans carry plain given names, Luke, Han, Leia, under folk-compound surnames like Skywalker, a name that is literally an occupation, the same way Smith is. Han Solo carries a word for a surname, alone, which is the whole character. Aliens carry apostrophes and unfamiliar syllable shapes that signal a language you do not speak. Droids carry designations, letters and numbers, because they are equipment with a personality. The craft of signaling character through names in general is documented on the how to name a character page.
What is a good Star Wars name?

Five registers, five jobs. The table is the system in one view. What a name is shaped like tells you what it belongs to before anyone explains:

What the shape signals

The registers never mix by accident in the films. A Darth never carries a designation. A droid never carries an apostrophe. Pick your register first.
What are Star Wars last names?
Occupations and qualities, worn as surnames. Skywalker is a folk compound the way Smith and Cooper are occupational surnames: it names what the family does. Solo is a quality, alone, worn by a man who insists he needs nobody. Six generated surnames in the same registers:

All invented, all decomposable. The wider craft of building invented-but-explainable surnames is the fantasy last name generator's whole subject, same discipline, different galaxy.
The apostrophe rule
The apostrophe says: this name came from a language you do not speak. That is the whole rule, and the saga states it structurally rather than in dialogue. Twi'lek, the species name itself, carries one. The Chiss carry the deepest documented version: Mitth'raw'nuruodo, the full name of Thrawn, is family, core, and ending joined by apostrophes, and Basic speakers shorten it because they cannot comfortably say the whole thing. The name is a grammar lesson in three syllable groups:

What the apostrophes do
Mitth'raw'nuruodo

Ar'alani

The rule has a failure mode and it is everywhere in fan fiction: apostrophes sprinkled for flavor with no structure under them. The generator draws family, core, and ending as real slots so the joints stay meaningful. Two of the three banks are invented and say so on every receipt.

R2-D2 is the best receipt in the set: George Lucas named the droid after a editing cue in American Graffiti, and the designation format stuck as the droid convention ever since.
Star Wars names vs fantasy names
Same tools, different settings. Both genres build names from meaningful morphemes and label their inventions. Fantasy leans on compounded beauty, Star Wars on audible morality and register splits. The discipline transfers:
Press Generate and read the receipt. Pick the species register first: human, Sith, alien, hunter, or droid. Each draw shows its parts and which documented convention it follows. A Star Wars name is a costume. Pick the one that fits your character's cantina.
Is the generator accurate to Star Wars naming?
The conventions are real. The specific names are ours, and labeled. The Darth title, the dark-word Sith pattern, the plain-human-plus-compound-surname register, the Chiss apostrophe structure, and the droid designation format are all documented from the films and books. Every invented part in a draw says invented on its own receipt.
Can I generate Sith names only?
Yes. Pick the Sith Lord pill. Every draw then carries the Darth title plus a word built on the documented sound pattern, dark vowels and hard consonants, the Vader-to-Plagueis line. The villain craft in general lives on the villain name generator.
How do Star Wars names work?
By species, and on purpose. George Lucas built names with sound symbolism: Darth evokes dark, Vader reads as father in Dutch and German, Sidious leans on insidious, Maul is just maul. Humans get plain names with folk-compound surnames. Aliens get apostrophes and unfamiliar shapes. Droids get designations. The conventions table below maps the whole system.
Where these names come from. The conventions are documented from the films and published books: the Sith title and its dark-word pattern, the human folk-compound surname register, the Chiss family'core'ending apostrophe structure, and the droid designation format. Canon names appear only as grammar receipts, and the generator's own word banks are invented and labeled as such. Where every name's receipt comes from →
