How do Tolkien’s elf names work?
One person, several names, and the system is documented. A father-name at birth: Curufinwë, craft-skill plus the grandfather’s name. A mother-name later, often prophetic: Fëanáro, spirit of fire. An epessë, an after-name earned or given: Gil-galad, star of radiance, worn by a man whose father-name was Ereinion, scion of kings. Felagund is a Dwarvish epessë, cave-hewer, worn by an elf-king. Sindarin or Quenya?
Two lanes, and the names shift when the story does. Quenya is the elder tongue, the deep past, the ritual name. Sindarin is the everyday tongue of Middle-earth. The Noldor carried Quenya names west to east, then wore Sindarin forms as the centuries turned: Fëanáro became Fëanor, Itarildë became Idril, Teleporno became Celeborn.
