How do elvish names work?

Element root, role suffix, join. Thal (forest) + wen (maiden) = Thalwen. Arwen parses the same way, and so does every name above. That's the grammar, complete. Anything more you'd want to know about it lives in the full lesson on the how elvish names work page.

What are elvish last names?

Sometimes, and it depends on the tradition. Where a tradition uses them, the form is the house name: a nature image plus a dweller suffix, marking a lineage. Six documented game-lore houses, decomposed:

Elvish house surnames with their builds and lineage senses
SurnameBuilt fromHouse/lineage sense
Stormragestorm + ragehouse of the tempest-fury lineage
Sunstridersun + striderhouse of one who walks in sunlight
Whisperwindwhisper + windhouse of the hushed wind
Windrunnerwind + runnerhouse of the swift runner
Silvermoonsilver + moonhouse of the silver moon
Autumnblazeautumn + blazehouse of the autumn fire

For invented house-surname builds, the fantasy last name generator runs the same grammar with its labels on.

What is the difference between elvish, elven, and elfin names?

Three adjectives for overlapping ideas. All three clusters are real search behavior. People genuinely split across the words:

Elvish, elven, and elfin compared
TermWhat it refers toExample use
elvishthe language-family adjective, of the elvish tonguesan elvish name, built like Sindarin
elventhe people and things, of the elves themselveselven names, elven customs
elfinsmall and delicate, the English fairy senseelfin names, elfin features

Is elvish a real word? Yes, as a constructed-language adjective. It names a family of invented tongues, and the names built in their style.

Which traditions do elf names come from?

Four, each labeled honestly. No tradition gets ranked; each gets its receipt:

Elf name questions, answered

What is a rare elf name?

Five low-frequency picks, each with its receipt. Sylvaion: sylva + ion, "son of the shadow-wood." Eryndir: ery + dir, "keeper of the dawn." Nimgal: nim + gal, "white radiance." Fendriel: fen + driel, "garland-daughter of the marsh-light." Mirnor: mir + nor, "fire of the jewel." Rare here means uncommon parts, not made-up sounds.

Can elf names be short?

Yes. Two morphemes make a complete name, and a root alone can too. Aelwen is already whole: ael (light) + wen (maiden). Elvish name grammar is compound, not long. Length only comes from stacking more meaning-bearing parts.

What are wood elf names?

Forest-morpheme builds on the same compound grammar. Thal (forest) and loth (blossom) carry the wood-elf register: Thalwen, Thaldir, Lothwen. The wood elf name generator builds them directly, and the wood elf names list tables the full set.

Where the meanings come from. Canon glosses are checked against published glossaries; invented compounds are labeled invented. The label is on every row of every table. Where every name's receipt comes from →
