What are japanese pet names?

67 real names, six lanes, one rule. This page owns the core that works for any species. The species-specific traditions live next door: dog stereotypes, strength words and Hachikō on the dog list; fluff words, calico luck and Tama on the cat list. Every row here shows script, reading and meaning.

Grouped by lane. The reading column is the honesty column.

The nature core

Japanese naming, pets included, keeps pointing at the world. The sky lane: sun, moon-viewing, the Big Dipper, a rainbow. The time lane: morning, dusk, and the old month names, which are receipts all by themselves. Kisaragi is February, Shiwasu is December, and a pet born in either can wear the word. The plants close the loop: lotus, lily, bamboo grass, pine.

The meaning is the receipt, the reading is the call, and the two stay separate on every row. That separation is the whole method: the pet learns Tsu-ki-mi, you keep the moon. The five-step version of the method is the how to name a pet guide.

The affection suffixes

Japanese can build pet names the way a joiner builds a chair. -maru (circle) closes a name with affection; it once closed ship names too. -taro and -ko borrow the person-name endings softly. The table's suffix rows are working builds, not trivia:

The suffix grammar with builds

-maru 丸circle, affection, completenessHanamaru: flower circle, the good-job mark
-tarō 太郎the eldest-son endingKotarō: little Taro
-ko 子the child ending, soft pet useMomoko: peach child
-ta 太the plump endingGonta: the roly-poly build
Hime 姫princess, standaloneHime: the throne, no suffix needed

Which species list is yours?

When the species matters, the species lists take over. The dog list carries the stereotype names, the strength words and the six native breeds. The cat list carries the fluff words, the calico vocabulary and Tama the stationmaster. The fish, bird and horse tails carry their own registers: koi classes, call names, warhorse chronicles. The Korean corner has its own receipts, hangul and the Jindo monuments.

Japanese pet names questions, answered

Do these work for birds and rabbits?

Yes. The nature core is species-neutral on purpose. A bird named Hare (clear sky) and a rabbit named Pyon (hop) both carry their receipts cleanly. The species-specific lists, dog stereotypes and cat fluff words, sit one click away.

What is a good starter name?

Hare, Tsukimi or Dango: one word, one clear meaning, two to four beats. The receipt fits on a tag, the reading is on the row, and none of them claim more than they are. If you want the grammar too, pick a suffix build like Hanamaru and read the section below the table.

How do I write my pet's name in kanji?

Pick the gloss you mean, not just the sound. The same reading can carry several characters, and the characters are the meaning. Use the reading column to check what your pet actually hears, and the script column to keep what the name says on paper.

Where this data comes from. Readings and glosses follow standard Japanese dictionaries. The old month names (Kisaragi, Minazuki, Nagatsuki, Shiwasu) are the documented classical calendar. Suffix conventions (-maru, -taro, -ko) follow name-formation references. Where every name's receipt comes from →
