Japanese male names lean on a small set of endings (-to, -ta, -ki, -shi), and the kanji underneath does the talking. Every name below shows its characters, what they mean, and how to read it.
What are common Japanese male names?
Haruto, Ren, Sota and Yuto lead current rankings: sun-and-stars, lotus, vast-and-great, calm-and-stars. The table runs in commonness order, and the same list answers the phrasing variations. Names for guys, masculine names, popular boy names: same set, receipts attached. Copy any row or the whole set.

Japanese male names with readings, kanji builds and meanings
Masculine names mark gender with ending morphemes, and with kanji choice: 陽 sun, 海 sea, 武 warrior. Haruto is 陽 (sun) joined to 斗 (Big Dipper): the ending supplies the shape, the first kanji supplies the claim.
Five ending families cover most of the list. -to marks the sky or the person (Haruto, Kaito). -ta is the "great" intensifier (Sota, Kenta). -ki carries nature or hope (Haruki, Daiki). -shi holds record, will, and administration (Takeshi, Shinji). And the fifth family is no ending at all: single-kanji names like Ren and Riku, the modern drift toward one clean character.

Sun, sea, trees, courage, craft: the masculine kanji families. Each name is a receipt for the trait it carries. Nature and virtue dominate: the sun-and-stars build in Haruto, the sea in Kaito, the artisan claim in Takumi. Grouped by theme, the same table rows read as families:

What are strong Japanese male names?
Strength in Japanese naming is virtue-coded: courage, sincerity, health, more than violence-coded. The samurai tradition's fingerprint: the strong name asserts a quality of character, not a body count. Eight attested picks:

And the one-sentence tool for "is this name male or female?": read the ending, then check the kanji. Worked on Sora 空: no gendered ending, unisex writing, "sky." The ending is the tell; the kanji is the deciding receipt. The other half of the comparison lives at Japanese female names.

Haruto 陽斗 ('sun and stars'), Ren 蓮 ('lotus') and Sota 蒼太 ('vast and great') sit at the top of current rankings. Each has its kanji receipt in the table above.
What are old-fashioned Japanese male names?
Isamu 勇 ('courage'), Takeshi 武 ('warrior'), Hiroshi 寛 ('generous'), Akio 昭夫 ('bright man'): the postwar generation's virtue kanji. They read as a grandfather's name in Japan today, and as a solid older character anywhere else.
Do Japanese men have middle names?
No. One given name is the legal convention. Some public figures adopt a Western-style middle name professionally, but it's self-chosen branding, not paperwork.
