How does the demon name generator work?

Four steps, then a name you can defend. Pick a mode: goetic names drawn from published grimoires, or infernal coinages built on documented endings. Press Generate. Read the receipt: the goetic chip carries the rank and the source entry; the infernal chips carry root, ending and epithet, labeled invented. Keep what fits; the shelf holds your shortlist.

Does this make up demons? No, and that is the point. The goetic bank is attested material from the 17th-century Ars Goetia, which itself drew on Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum of 1563. The invented mode says so on every draw. The full sourced table lives on the demon names page.

How do demon names work?

Moloth the Whisperer = mol (murk) + oth (attested goetic ending) + the Whisperer (epithet). That is the invented lane. The attested lane is simpler and stranger: whole names, fixed ranks, numbered entries. Bune is a Duke. Furcas is a Knight, the only one in the list.

The morphology is real. Goetic names favor hard endings: -oth in Paimon's Astaroth, -on in Amon and Beleth, -iel in Vassago and Vepar's kin. Those endings come from Hebrew and Greek roots filtered through Latin scribes. The rank titles are a second system stacked on top: King, Duke, Prince, Marquis, President, Earl, Knight, each with a legion count in the source. Read the receipt once and you can parse any demon list you meet. The naming-craft lesson for characters lives on the how to name a character page; this page carries the demon chapter.

What is a good demon name?

A good demon name carries a source or an honest label. Attested names bring their rank and entry. Invented builds decompose into root, ending and epithet. Here are names for demons with what they mean, part by part: ten names, the first four invented builds, the rest attested with sources named.

What are female demon names?

Female demon names come from named figures, not from a grammar of endings. The documented ones stand in specific texts, so the honest move is receipts:

How do demon names differ across traditions?

The traditions do not share a grammar; each has its own. Grimoire demons are ranked and numbered. Biblical names are titles and words. World myth names its own beings outright. One page, several systems, each labeled:

What are demon title conventions?

Ranks are the surname system of grimoire demons. A name alone does nothing in the goetic world. The rank places the demon in a hierarchy, and the office says what it does. Six documented titles carry most of the list:

Goetic receipts: the source chain

Every goetic name on this site carries its citation. The chain runs from Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (1563), through Reginald Scot's English translation (1584), into the Ars Goetia of the 17th-century Lemegeton, which fixed the 72-entry list most lists still copy. The ranks and legion counts ride along the whole way.

Later texts added their own layers: the Grimorium Verum's hierarchy, Collin de Plancy's Dictionnaire Infernal of 1863, and the classifications of Renaissance theologians. When a name entered the record matters for a writer: a demon summoned in a story set in 1400 cannot cite a grimoire printed in 1563. The receipts let you check.

Demon vs angel names

Opposite poles, one engine. Angel names assert something about God: the -el suffix says "of God" outright. Demon names describe function or rank, and the famous fallen ones often keep the angelic grammar they fell from. Vassago and Vepar end the way Seraphiel does, because the scribes were the same.

The angel name generator builds the other pole, receipts attached on both sides.

The seven princes, decomposed

The most cited demon table in Western tradition. Peter Binsfeld's 1589 classification paired each prince with a sin, drawing on older names. Every entry below is attested in the sources named:

Demon name generator questions, answered

What is my demon name?

The generator answers that directly. Pick a mode, press Generate, and read the receipt. Goetic mode draws an attested grimoire name with its rank and entry cited. Infernal mode builds a new name on documented endings, labeled invented. Either way you get parts, meaning and tradition.

Is the generator accurate to real demon naming?

Yes, because the attested names are cited, not invented. Goetic names come from the published Ars Goetia with rank and entry number. When the generator builds a new name in infernal mode, the tradition line says invented. No output ever carries a fake grimoire origin.

Can I get goetic names only?

Yes, stay on the Goetic mode and every draw is attested. Each receipt cites the rank and the entry: Bael, King, Ars Goetia 1. For the full 200-plus table with a source column on every row, use the demon names list.

What is the most famous demon name?

Lucifer, by reach. The Latin word means light-bearer, and it entered the tradition through a Latin translation of a Hebrew text. Beelzebub, Asmodeus and Astaroth follow close behind, each with its own documented source. The table on this page decomposes the famous set.

Where this data comes from. Goetic names carry their entry and rank from the published Lemegeton tradition; world-myth names carry their epic or scripture. Invented coinages say invented on the same line. Every name comes with a receipt. Where every name's receipt comes from →
