Angel Name Generator

Angel names are sentences about God. Michael is "who is like God": micha + el. The -el suffix means "of God," and every name below builds on that documented convention, receipt attached.

How does the angel name generator work?

Four steps, then a name you can defend. Pick a mode: theophoric builds, choir-root builds, or the fallen watchers of 1 Enoch. Press Generate. Read the receipt: the chips show the root and the suffix, and the gloss joins them into the name's claim. Keep what fits; the shelf holds your shortlist.

Are these real angel names? The grammar is real, and many draws land on attested names. Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Sariel, Jophiel all come out of the theophoric mode because that is how the sources built them. Pairings that are new builds follow the same rule and the tradition line says the convention is documented. The full attested table lives on the angel names page.

How do angel names work?

Raphael = raph (heals) + el (of God): "God heals." That pattern is the whole trick. An angel name is a small sentence with God as the anchor. Uriel says "light of God." Zadkiel says "righteousness of God." Raziel says "secret of God." The name does not describe the angel. It describes what God does through the angel.

The -iel spelling is the joined form, and the sources use both: Sariel and Sarel both appear in the manuscripts. Below the personal names sit the classes: seraphim from the burning ones, cherubim from the throne-guards, ophanim from the wheels. Kabbalistic texts then stacked rank on rank, and names like Seraphiel and Kerubiel rose exactly where class met theophory. Read one receipt and you can parse the whole host. The craft lesson lives on the how to name a character page; this is the angel chapter.

What is a good angel name?

A good angel name asserts something about God. If the gloss is not a claim, the name is decoration. Here is what angel names mean, part by part: ten names, the first six generator builds, the rest attested with sources named.

What are female angel names?

The grammar has no feminine endings; tradition supplies the few marked figures. Names for female angel characters therefore borrow the same theophory and let the story mark the bearer. Documented figures and attested pairings:

Gabriellegabr + iel + le (French feminine mark)God is my strength, borne by a woman
Arielar + iellion of God; attested angel name, reads either way

Sandalphonattested wholethe twin prince; tradition says the prophet Elijah
Lailahattested wholethe night angel of Talmudic tradition, a marked female figure
Barachielbarach + ielblessing of God; the Orthodox list

How do angel names differ across traditions?

Same suffix, different libraries. Scripture names almost no one. Enoch names the watchers. Kabbalah names seventy-two. The church calendars keep their own short list. Each tradition is labeled on every row:

What are angel title conventions?

Titles replace surnames. Angels have no families, so the record marks office instead of lineage. Six documented titles carry most of the tradition:

the prince of the presenceMetatronstands nearest the throne (3 Enoch)

The theophory table

Theophory means a name that carries its god inside. Angelic theophory is the cleanest example in any naming tradition: Hebrew root, el suffix, claim joined. Which roots pair with -el, and what each compound asserts:

Theophoric roots and what each compound asserts
RootGlossCompoundThe claim
michawho is likeMichaelwho is like God (a question that answers itself)

raphahealsRaphaelGod heals
urilight ofUrielGod is my light

razsecret ofRazielthe secret of God

Notice the pattern in the assertions: healing, light, righteousness, strength, secret. The tradition names what it wants God to do. Pick the right name for your angel by picking the claim first, then reading its parts off the table.

Angel vs demon names

One morphological family, split by allegiance. Demon names in the grimoires end in -oth and -on; fallen angels keep the -el they were named with. Samyaza and Kokabiel are watcher names, grammatically angelic, labeled fallen by 1 Enoch. The fallen did not get new names. They kept the receipts.

The demon name generator builds the other pole, with sources cited on every row.

The fallen subset, by source

Fallen names are labeled by the text that lists them. 1 Enoch names twenty leaders of the watchers, and chapter 69 adds more. These are the oldest fallen angel names in the record, and the label says fallen by that source, not by our say-so:

Angel name generator questions, answered

What is my angel name?

The generator answers that directly. Pick a mode, press Generate, and read the receipt. Theophoric mode pairs a Hebrew root with the -el suffix, the way the attested names are built. Choir mode builds from the angel classes. Fallen mode draws the watchers of 1 Enoch, labeled fallen.

Is the generator accurate to real angel naming?

Yes, the suffix convention is documented. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael really are built as Hebrew phrase plus -el: who is like God, God is my strength, God heals. This page extends that same grammar to new pairings, and the tradition line says which builds are attested versus constructed.

Can I get fallen angel names only?

Yes, switch to the Fallen watchers mode. Every draw is one of the named leaders from 1 Enoch 6, the oldest fallen list in the record, and the label says fallen by that source. The angel names page carries the full attested table with sources.

What are female angel names?

The grammar itself carries no gender; the claim does the work. The -el suffix asserts something about God, not about the bearer. For female angel characters, pick the claim and let the story mark the bearer: Haniel, grace of God, or Raziel, secret of God, both read either way. The female-names table on this page lists the attested pairings.

Where this data comes from. Attested names carry their source: scripture, 1 Enoch, Tobit, the Talmud, Kabbalistic lists. Constructed pairings say constructed, and the fallen subset is labeled by the text that lists it. Every name comes with a receipt. Where every name's receipt comes from →
