Warrior Cat Names by Pelt

Warrior cat names start with the pelt. The books' convention gives a kit a prefix that matches its fur, and that prefix stays for life. Pick a color below; every name shows the receipt for both its parts.

Which prefixes fit each pelt color?

One pelt, one prefix family. Graystripe is the receipt in one line: gray + stripe, a gray tabby named for exactly what you'd see. Eight families cover the pelt chart:

Black-and-white and tabby are pattern questions rather than pelt colors. Both are answered in the FAQ below, and the black-and-white table sits on the seed list.

Why does pelt color set the prefix?

Because the queen names the kit for what she sees at birth. Prefixes draw from the cats' own world: pelt words, plants, weather, prey. So the name reads true to the cat's look before anyone knows who the cat will become. Graystripe parses the same way as every name above: the gray is the look, the stripe is the earned half. Do prefixes have to match the pelt exactly? No. Nature nouns qualify too, which is why a pale cat can be Birch- or Dove- rather than strictly White-.

The full cross-pelt list, every family plus the meaning maps, is warrior cat names — the full 200+ list.

Do pelt names change with rank?

No. The prefix stays for life; the suffix tracks the stage. Does a cat keep its prefix when it becomes a warrior? Yes, through every promotion. What suffix comes after a pelt prefix? -kit at birth, -paw at apprenticeship, a warrior skill suffix, then -star for a leader. One prefix, four stages:

The same prefix across four life stages

ApprenticeEmberpaw

How do pelt names work in a Clan name?

They don't. Pelt prefixes name individuals; Clan names name territories. Does your cat's pelt affect its Clan? No. Clans are named for where they live, [nature noun] + Clan, not for what their cats look like. A black cat can belong to any Clan on the map.

Warrior cat names by pelt, answered

What are warrior cat names for a black-and-white cat?

Eight from the black-and-white families. Magpiewing, Patchfoot, Tuxheart, Badgerclaw, Spotear, Flecknose, Magpietail, and Patchcloud. The convention is the same two-part grammar with prefixes that name the patched coat. The full fourteen-row table lives on the seed list's black-and-white section.

What are warrior cat names for tabby cats?

Tabby is a pattern, not a pelt color. The suffix usually carries it. Prefixes stay color-based, and the tabby marker rides in as -stripe: Ashstripe, Cinderstripe, Emberstripe, Oakstripe, Maplestripe, Slatestripe. That division of labor is the grammar working as designed.

Slatestripeslate + stripeflat blue-gray; tabby bands

Can a white cat have a non-white prefix?

Yes. Prefixes also draw from nature, not just color words. Birch-, Cloud-, Mist-, and Dove- all read true on a pale cat. The convention is "reads true to the look," not a strict color chart.

Do tortoiseshell and calico names differ?

Barely. Both take mottled-coat prefixes, with a family lean. Tortoiseshell skews Bramble-, Sorrel-, and Russet-; calico skews Patch-, Dapple-, and Speckle-. The suffix grammar is identical either way.
