Village Names

Village names name the ground and the settlers. Brookthorpe is "outlying farm at the brook": brook (the landform) + thorpe (the Norse farm word). Here are names for villages with their parts on the table: 110 of them, landform roots and hamlet suffixes, six real villages included, each row carrying its receipt.

What are village names?

One landform root plus one hamlet suffix, joined. Every generated row here passes the hamlet-suffix criterion: the root names the ground, the suffix is one of the village-scale settlement words, and the tradition column carries the suffix's regional origin, Norse, Saxon, or Celtic. The last six rows are attested villages. Names bold, glosses italic, nothing between the rows.

How do village names work?

Bind a landform to a hamlet word. Grimsby is Grimr plus by, one man's farmstead village. Applethwaite is a Norse farmer's apple clearing in Cumbria. The suffix carries the archaeology: by and thorpe for the Danelaw, thwaite for the northwest, combe for the West Country, ham and cote for the Saxon south. Choose the family and you have chosen your settlers. The craft behind the choice is taught on the how to name a character page, in its worldbuilding section.

The hamlet suffix map

The suffixes are regional fingerprints. Norse -by and -thorpe names run through the Danelaw counties; Norfolk carries one of the densest -thorpe concentrations in England. -Thwaite clusters in Cumbria. -Combe belongs to the West Country. -Ham and -cote cover the Saxon south. A fantasy region that uses one family consistently reads as having one settlement history.

Village name questions, answered

What are village names based on?

The landform underneath and the settlers who arrived. Hill, brook, fen, thorn hedge: the root names the ground. Thorpe, by, combe, ham: the suffix names the settlement type and its region, Norse in the Danelaw, Saxon in the south, Celtic-rooted in the west.

Are these village names real?

Six rows are real villages, and they say so. Grimsby, Grimethorpe, Applethwaite, Ashcombe, Ascot, and Nottingham are attested with their decompositions. Every other row is a build from the same documented morphology, with its regional tag in the tradition column.

What is a good village name?

One where the landform root is true of the site. Fenham belongs in a fen; Cliffthwaite belongs where Norse farmers cleared a cliff-top. The suffix picks the region and the founding size, and the root picks the ground. Get both right and the name reads settled. Build your own in the generator.

Where the meanings come from. Hamlet suffix glosses and regional tags follow published English place-name scholarship; every receipt example (Grimsby, Grimethorpe, Applethwaite, Nottingham, Ascot) is a real attested toponym. Landform-root builds are ours, built on that documented system. Where every name's receipt comes from →
