Halfling Names

Halfling names follow rules, and the rules are cozy. Samwise is Sam (homely root) + wise (full close), glossed "half-wise" in the Old English. Here they are with their parts on the table: names for halflings, each with its morphemes and its register.

What are halfling names?

Homely roots plus register closes, documented style. Names bold, glosses italic, tradition column flat. The famous forms are canon with real etymologies; the builds on the same roots say so. Nothing between the rows:

What do halfling names mean?

What their parts say, when the record supplies one. Samwise carries a real Old English etymology; most builds mean exactly their two labeled morphemes. Twelve meaning spotlights, receipts attached:

How do halfling names work?

Homely root, register close. Sam + wise for the genealogy book, Sam for the road, Rosie-class for the kitchen. That is the whole engine. The compound-name lesson the race grid shares lives on the how elvish names work page.

What are halfling last names?

Cozy English family names, nearly all documented. The index, notes attached:

The three-name register

One halfling, three names, and the door decides which one you hear. The full form goes in the genealogy book: Samwise, Meriadoc, Peregrin. The short form is for the road: Sam, Merry, Pippin. The nickname is for the kitchen, and only people who have been fed there get to use it: Rosie, not Rose. Tolkien's text runs all three at once, which is the receipt: the register is documented, not decorative. The tables above lean given and female and male; the nicknames live in the female table here and in the generator's nickname mode. Pick the door before you pick the word, and the name does half the characterization for you.

Halfling name questions, answered

What is a rare halfling name?

An old-family surname or a deep-drawer given name. Brockhouse and Puddifoot appear rarely in print and carry old-Shire weight. On the given side, Rufwise-class builds use the Rufus root, which the tables reach for less than Sam and Bil. Rare still means documented roots, receipts attached.

Can halfling names be short?

Yes: the nickname is a complete name. Rosie, Tam, Bella. The register runs three doors deep, from the genealogy form to the kitchen name, and the short end is where halflings actually live.

What are halfling surnames like?

Cozy English compounds marking a family line. Baggins, Took, Brandybuck: kitchen and garden words, trade words, place words. Nearly all documented Tolkien families; the one honest extension on this page is labeled. The halfling name generator runs the surname register directly.

Where the meanings come from. The register and its documented names trace to Tolkien's hobbit tables and the game tables that inherited them; etymologies are cited only where the record supplies one. Receipts assemble from the same dataset the generator draws from. Where every name's receipt comes from →
