Why do shepherds get German names?

Because the breed is a German institution with a paper trail. In 1899, Max von Stephanitz co-founded the SV, the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde, and registered the first shepherd: Horand von Grafrath, a dog born Hektor Linksrhein and renamed for his new station. German has stayed the breed's working language. The world champion title is the Sieger, "the winner". The protection-sport trials run on German commands. A German name for a shepherd is not costume. It is provenance.

The American chapter runs through the two film dogs who saved the breed's US popularity in the 1920s: Rin Tin Tin, found in Lorraine in 1918 by an American soldier, and Strongheart, the screen name of Etzel von Oeringen. Both are rows in the table above, with their receipts.

The German command register

These twelve words are real working commands, used in IGP and Schutzhund training worldwide. They are here as receipts, not as call names. A dog named Sitz lives a confusing life. Name around the register, not on it.

The screen belongs to every dog, shepherd or not: the how to name a pet guide walks it.

Registered name vs call name

Two names, two documents, one dog. The registered name is the club record. The call name is what the dog answers to. German breeding joins them with the vom and von der convention, "of the" and "from the", so a pedigree reads like an address.

Sound notes for a working breed

The working voice sets the rules. Shepherds train hard, so the name has to survive a training field: short, crisp, nothing that rhymes with a command.

German shepherd names questions, answered

Should I use a German name for my German shepherd?

The breed was built in Germany, so the receipts run deep. The SV, the founding club, registered the first shepherd in 1899. German has been the working language of the breed ever since, from the Sieger title to the IGP commands. A German name is a nod to that history. An English name is also fine. The receipt matters more than the language.

What did the first German shepherds get named?

The first registered shepherd was Horand von Grafrath, born Hektor Linksrhein. His breeder's convention put a "from the place" tail on the name, and the vom and von der pattern is still how German pedigrees read. The American film dogs came next: Rin Tin Tin, found in Lorraine in 1918, and Strongheart, whose registered name was Etzel von Oeringen.

Can I name my shepherd after Rin Tin Tin?

Yes. The name belongs to a line of dogs, and the story is the receipt. The original was found on a battlefield in Lorraine in September 1918 and went on to headline films through the 1920s. Say the story when you say the name, and the receipt travels.

Where this data comes from. German glosses follow standard dictionaries. Breed history follows the documented record: the SV founding in 1899, Horand von Grafrath as the first registered shepherd, Rin Tin Tin found in Lorraine in 1918, Strongheart as the registered Etzel von Oeringen. The command register is the working IGP/Schutzhund set. Where every name's receipt comes from →
