How does the dwarf name generator work?

How do dwarf names work?
Thorin = thor (thunder) + in (of the line). That pattern is the whole trick. A dwarf given name is a Norse-style root plus a line suffix. A dwarf clan name is the same root plus an epithet that records what the family does.
Both halves are old news. Real Old Norse names compounded exactly like this: Sigrid is sigr (victory) + fridr (beautiful), and -sson and -dóttir still form real patronymics in Iceland. The oldest published dwarf name list, the Dvergatal in the Poetic Edda, already contained Thorin, Durin, and Dain. That is why a generated name like Grimur reads as a dwarf on first sight: the grammar is the one your ear knows from the sagas. Can a dwarf name be unisex? Rarely, but yes. Clan names are fully shared: Grimforge belongs to anyone of that line. On the given side, the suffix carries the gender.

Clan names as lineage receipts
The epithet is the family's trade, written into the name. A human surname like Smith or Fletcher records what an ancestor did for work. Dwarf clan names do the same job in the same way, just with a forge accent: Forge for the smiths, Stone for the masons, Breaker for the siege line, Helm for the armorers. Read a dwarf's clan name and you have read the family trade, possibly the founding deed. That is why the generator keeps the epithet bank trade-shaped instead of adjective-shaped. "Grimforge" tells you a story; "Grimdark" tells you a mood. If your world has guild politics, let the clan name do the work: two dwarves named Forgebreaker and Forgehelm are from the same guild quarter, and your reader can feel it before you say it.

Dwarf vs orc names
Both are short and heavy; the difference is what the ending means. A dwarf name ends in a lineage or trade. An orc name ends in a sound, or carries an epithet earned by one deed, not a trade.
